Caring for Your Diamond

During ordinary wear, your diamond ring can be exposed to many things such as body oil, perspiration, hairspray, household products, etc.  These things can cause a build up on the surface of your diamond that can hide its brilliance.  That’s why we suggest that you clean your diamond regularly so that its fire and beauty is never hidden.

Cleaning Your Diamond Jewelry At Home:

Cleaning your diamond ring and diamond jewelry periodically is always a good thing and can be done very quickly and easily in your own home.  Here’s a simple cleaning method to make your diamond ring sparkle and always look beautiful:

1)  Put some warm water and some liquid soap in a small dish (such as liquid dish soap or liquid hand soap).  Then put your diamond ring in the dish and let it soak for a while.  The more dirty your ring is, the longer you should let it soak.  Usually, 5 minutes to an hour is more than enough time, but you can let it soak longer if you desire.

2)  Now take your diamond ring out of the solution and use a toothbrush and warm water to gently clean your ring (you should do this over a bowl to insure you don’t drop your ring down into the sink drain).  Be careful not to scrub too hard and be cautious not to snag or bend any of the prongs or mountings that are holding your diamonds in place.

3)  When you’re finished cleaning your ring with the toothbrush, rinse the ring in a dish with clean warm water.  Finish by gently drying off your ring with a soft non-abrasive cloth or towel. Do not rub the cloth too harshly on the ring as you do not want to snag or bend any of the prongs with the cloth threads or fibers (patting the cloth on your ring usually works best to avoid damage).  Your ring should now be clean and it should sparkle beautifully with the brilliance you love!

Please take caution when cleaning your diamond jewelry and always use the utmost care.  Shay’s Diamonds will not be responsible for any loss, damage, missing stones or accidents that may occur during your cleaning process or at anytime while wearing or storing the jewelry.  The cleaning method we described above is suggested solely for loose diamonds and for diamonds mounted in gold settings (such as rings).  We are not recommending this cleaning method for any other types of stones, gems or metals.

Cleaning Mistakes – Things To Avoid:

Do not clean your diamond ring with jewelry cleaning products or any other solutions that contain ammonia (such as Windex®), degreasers, bleach or acids.  This is especially important if you have a clarity enhanced diamond or a color treated diamond.  Stick with mild liquid hand soap or liquid dish soap for the best results.

Do not use ultra-sonic cleaning devices on your diamond ring or diamond jewelry.  These devices use powerful vibrations to help dislodge the dirt.  Unfortunately, these same vibrations can also cause your diamonds to become loose from their settings and they may soon fall out.  Although these types of devices are popular among many consumers, they are not recommended.

Visiting Your Local Jeweler:

Your diamond jewelry should be professionally cleaned and inspected by a competent jeweler in your local area at least once a year.  We highly recommend that you schedule an appointment every 6 months.  Your jeweler can professionally clean your diamond jewelry and also inspect for any signs of damage, loose stones, or other issues that may need to be addressed.  The jeweler will check the prongs and mountings to make sure your diamonds are secure and won’t fall out.  If you purchased a clarity enhanced diamond or a color treated diamond, be sure to let your jeweler know that your diamond is clarity enhanced or color treated so that he can clean and service your diamond jewelry properly.

Taking Care Of Your Diamond Jewelry:

Diamonds are considered to be the hardest natural substance on the earth, but they can still be damaged or chipped if they are hit with an impact.  Prongs, mountings and settings can easily be bent or altered if hit or simply snagged on a piece of clothing or other fabric.  This can cause stones to become loose and even fall out.  Fine diamond jewelry is extremely valuable and should be treated accordingly.  Therefore, Shay’s Diamonds will not be responsible for any damage that may occur to an item after the sale is made.  We do not perform free repair service or issue refunds, replacement or store credit for any damaged items regardless of how the damage occurred.  However, we do provide a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee on every item we sell (please click the link for full details).  It is important that during your daily activities, you remain conscious of the fact you are wearing a fine piece of valuable diamond jewelry.

Try to avoid contact to your diamond ring with household cleaners (such as ammonia, bleach, acids or degreasers).  These types of harsh products are not good for your diamond and can also affect the integrity of your setting and mountings that hold your diamonds.

Fine jewelry can be worn on a continual daily basis, however, some activities such as sports, exercising, swimming, strenuous labor, etc. are really unsuitable when wearing any type of fine jewelry as you may damage the jewelry or diamonds without even knowing it.  Your fine diamond jewelry is precious and should give you a lifetime of enjoyment – use wisdom with your various activities when wearing any type of fine diamond jewelry.

If you do not wear your diamond jewelry for any length of time, we recommend that each piece should be wrapped individually in a soft cloth and stored in a jewelry box.  You should keep each piece of jewelry separated in the jewelry box in order to protect the items from damaging each other.
