Colored Diamonds
When most people think of diamonds, they usually think of white or colorless as this is what most people desire. However, natural diamonds can also come in several other colors.
Many natural colored diamonds such as blue and pink, can be very rare and extremely expensive. Due to the high cost of these colored diamonds, various color treatment processes were created so that you can purchase a colored diamond at a much lower cost.
The diamond industry has now created very effective color treatment processes that can change the original white color of a natural diamond into a completely different color. There are several different processes out there including; Irradiation; High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT); Infusion; Layering and others. Color treatment is generally used to change a natural white diamond to either blue; green; fancy yellow; black or pink (there are other colors also available).
The value of a color treated diamond does not decrease from its original graded value just because it’s been through the color treatment process. In almost all cases, the consumer market value and appreciation will actually increase once the diamond has been through the color treatment process! Please note that color treated diamonds are still REAL GENUINE DIAMONDS. The color has been changed, but it still remains a real natural diamond. All diamond testing machines and devices will validate and confirm that they are real and authentic diamonds.
Shay’s Diamonds offers colored diamonds that are both ‘natural’ and ‘color treated’ diamonds. We always let our customers know the difference by stating on the item’s description whether the colored diamond is a natural color or color treated.
The color treatment process is very durable and was created to last indefinitely under normal conditions. Normally, the process will not be affected under everyday wear and usage. Ultrasonic cleaning, mild detergents and hot water should not affect the color treatment process in most cases. The main thing that can affect the treatment is the direct heat of a torch that is burning at 1500 degrees or hotter (such as a jeweler’s torch). Boiling acids and ammonia based solutions may also affect the treatment. Whenever you take your color treated diamond ring to a jeweler for cleaning, repairs, sizing or service, it is important that you let them know that the diamond is color treated so that they can service your ring properly.
