The 4 C's
In the diamond industry, you’ll often hear the term “The 4 C’s”. The term represents 4 descriptive words each beginning with the letter “C”. The 4 words are:
Color
Clarity
Carat Weight
Cut
Jewelers and consumers everywhere use these 4 basic descriptions to quickly evaluate the general overall quality of a specific diamond. We’ve displayed some charts and pictures below so you can easily view what these 4 descriptions represent.
Color:
The chart below shows the various degrees of diamond shades for a typical diamond. Most consumers purchase diamonds in the G – J range as they provide the most value and are still near colorless and beautiful. Usually, most people cannot see any color difference between a ‘colorless’ diamond and a ‘near colorless’ diamond. Diamonds can also come in other colors such as; Blue; Pink; Green; Black and others (please click on Colored Diamonds for more information). There is also a diamond color called “Fancy Yellow” which can also be highly desired by many people. A “Fancy Yellow” diamond should not be confused with the ‘light yellow’ diamond shades shown below on our chart. A “Fancy Yellow" diamond can offer very intense color and is very appealing to those who enjoy this special yellow diamond color.

Clarity:
The clarity of a diamond is based on the inclusions a specific diamond may have. Diamonds with a flawless clarity grade of “FL” or “IF” are somewhat rare and extremely expensive. Diamonds in the SI range are the most popular among the general public because they provide the most value and their clarity is still exceptionally clean to the naked eye.

Carat Weight:
The ‘Carat Weight’ pictures displayed below should not be considered an accurate representation of actual round diamond carat size. This is due to the fact that computer screen configurations can vary which can modify and change the original size of our chart. Therefore, the diagram below is simply offered as an indicator for you to see that there are size differences between the various carat weights.

Cut:
The ‘Cut’ of a diamond is often confused with the ‘shape’ of a diamond. As you can see in our diagram below, the ‘Cut’ is actually referring to the specific way in which a finished diamond shape is cut and configured. The way a diamond is cut determines how light will pass through the diamond and reflect out.

Diamond Shapes:
Diamonds also come in many different shapes. Listed below are various diamond shapes.
